Tourism:
Thurles is at the
doorstep of some of the finest landscape scenery and sites of interest in
Ireland. There is a choice of
tours covering areas of historical interest and taking in some
breathtaking scenery.
The Golden Vale at the
heart of Tipperary has magnificent rich landscapes, famous for its
thoroughbred horses. Situated nearby are some of the famous Stud farms
with Coolmore Stud and Ballydoyle to name but a few.
Continuing further south
you are in the Valley of Slievenamon, the home of Charles Kickham,
Tipperary's most loved novelist. There are beautiful drives taking in the
Vee drive with its lovely mountain views and lakes, very popular for
picnic trips.
South West of Tipperary
you will discover the spectacular Glen of Aherlow bordering Tipperary
town. North of Thurles you can take in the popular Lakeshore Drive
bordering Lough Derg, the largest lake on the Shannon. Dromineer village
situated on the lake is Tipperary's largest quay and offers a variety of
watersports activities. It also plays host to Lough Derg Yacht Club, the
second oldest yacht club in Ireland.
Golf and Fishing are also
available for visitors to Thurles.
Within the town itself is
the Famine & War Museum which focuses on scenes from the famine days.
